The Kendalia Halle

The Kendalia Halle was constructed in 1903 by the Nicholas Spring Musical Group and the local people of Kendalia to be used for concerts, plays, dances, and other social gatherings such as weddings and receptions. The current owner has done some renovating of the Halle and other buildings over the last 30 years, all while preserving the historical ambiance of the complex. Major renovations include: straightening the hall by moving it 12 inches using pulleys, reinforcing the building’s foundation with concrete and steel, adding wood paneling to the interior, and insulating the roof to help cool down the hall on warm summer evenings.

The building is approximately 3,500 square feet in size with a bar used for serving beverages, a VIP area, and seating area around the dance floor. The dance floor has been called the best dance floor in the Hill Country by many people. The main entrance is on the north side of the dance hall with a side entrance on the east side. The stage, located on the south side of the dance hall, has access from outside via a door on the East side for bands and entertainers.

The George Elbel Building

The George Elbel Building was built in 1911 by a local businessman and has seen a number of businesses over the 110+ year history of the building. The building has a main area, a kitchen area, and a full bathroom with a large shower. In the back of the building is a storage area. Beside and behind the Elbel Building is another storage area that was also used as a feed store at one time. There is a basement in the building that was used as a bar, known as The Rathskellar. In German, Ratskeller refers to cellar. This is a very unique area in itself.

Charming Residence

The residence is approximately 825 square feet with two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and breakfast area, utility room, and bathroom. The property has been used mainly as a rental residence but could be used as a main residence or an Airbnb or Vrbo rental.

Large Yard

History of The Kendalia Halle*

Nestled in the southern part of the Texas Hill Country, time stands still for a few Saturday nights each month. As a tribute to the small community of Kendalia, the fun loving folks of the area headed by the Nicholas Syring Musical Group, erected Kendalia Halle in 1903 for entertainment, plays, family gatherings and of course, dancing.

Since folks had to travel great distances by wagon, it was a weekend event. The children slept on the benches surrounding the dance floor, food was brought by everyone to share, and of course drinks were served. If a person became too rowdy, he was chained the tree outside the hall until he sobered.

Several German halls were built in the area around this time and Kendalia Halle is one of the best examples of the architectural structure of these historical gems. Built of red fir lumber which was shipped from Oregon by train to Boerne, then hauled to Kendalia on horse-drawn wagons, Kendalia Halle is a testament to these turn-of-the-century buildings that stand today. Often referred to as one of the best dance floors in Texas, many a dancer has boot scooted across its wood.
